Free Drugs!

It is true! I took my boy to the vet yesterday because he cut his foot pad and has now licked them into infection!
Well I told her I had meds but got home and counted and I didn't have nearly enough. I called them back and made arrangements to go by there this afternoon. When I got there, I was a little dissappointed that a bottle wasn't waiting. The girl up front said "she left you a script, you can fill it anywhere".
So I went to Publix (grocer) and when I dropped it off I asked the pharmacy tech how much and she said it was one of the free antibiotics.
Sure enough, when I picked it up 30 minutes later-it was free!
yayy!
ot - pup with discharge

My sister has an 11 month old lab boy - neutered. He has a lot of discharge from his penis. Cultured, lots of white blood cells, no bacteria, no it is not semen. He improved on antibiotics, but my sis was concerned about keeping him on endlessly - when he came off, discharge returned - the vet knocked him out and did a total exam - nothing. He is not uncomfortable, no peeing problems, no licking. Discharge smells slightly metalic, is white/clear and slightly creamy not terribly viscous. "Lots" means there is a very wet spot after laying down and dripping when walking - any ideas ?

Erika M.

CH Sweet Wilamina Gem of Jersey 7-20-1999 11-17-2009

Wilamina was a wonderful comapnion and pet to me for so many years. I remember the first time I saw her (Maureen and I drive to New Jersey to get her) - she was such a chunky beautiful puppy. She was a Ch Greiner Hall Jedadiah daughter - and she had his wonderful, sweet temperament.

Wilamina finished her championship very easily and we had a lot of fun showing her, but her value to me was as a friend and companion. She was such a goof ball, always singing to me and making me laugh. She guarded me with fierce loyality, but she was always friendly to strangers that I let her know were OK.

Wilamina gave me some wonderful puppies (three of which share my home and my life - Goody, Angel and Rogue.) and she was a wonderful, caring mother. She also was a wonderful caring grandmother to other bitches puppies, even to a kitten and a baby squirrel.

I wish she could have lived to be 50 - I loved her every day of her life, she was so vey special. I have so many wonderful memories of her - even with a house full of her babies and grandbabies the house seems empty with out her.

Thanks to her breeder, Roberta Pavoll, fo allowing me to have this wonderful girl and share the years with me, and to Gloria Cuthbert for steering me to Roberta in the first place. It takes a village.
This is why I love Trucker..

As much as I love show brags...I have another brag...

I have been taking Trucker on little jogs ( just to keep him in shape for the show season) just 2-3 blocks. every other day.

Well, we have been encountering various dogs. Trucker doesnt pay much attention to any dog really...he doesnt look long at them just has a " oh..whatever" attitude.

But today a rhodesian looking dog ( intact male) started doing the stare down..and it was to late to avoid him. So I nudged Trucker into a driveway off the sidewalk to keep distance. As the dog came close he started snarling and barking aggressively and lunging towards Trucker. ( We were about 15 ft away)

Trucker immediately laid down ( not commanded by me) and then continued to look at this dog. The owner was telling her dog to quit ( he was wearing muzzle so obviously has an issue) The dog seemed to get more angry when Trucker laid down.

As soon as the dog walked by...Trucker got up and we continued...he never looked back and his tail was in the air as usually...darting around like a lion. ( typical happy tail for Trucker)

I never thought I could have a dog more laid back and easy going as Harley...but Trucker is way more. Harley wouldve barked back if confronted like that...I think her "momma bear" would come out.
Trucker on the other hand...acted like this dog was waste of time LOL!!

Hi all, well i have a dilemma and i need to know more!

So we decided we would do an SI with fresh semen on Mini when she comes into season next to give her the best chance of conceiving.

The vet agreed with this. But now they want to do a TCI with fresh semen instead of an SI.

Which is better, i would like to hear from breeders the pros and cons of both please
The 1900 Mastiff crisis

Mastiffs have had a number of crises. Probably there was one about 1800, when Sydenham Edwards said the Mastiff was "nearly extinct where he was probably an aborigine, or is bastardized by numberless crosses,". There was one after the Second World War, when there was only one young bitch in the UK and a handful in the USA and Canada. Less well known is the crisis centred around 1900. One aspect was the virtual disappearance of the Mastiff from North America. In the USA, there were only 24 registrations from 1906 to 1918, most of them UK exports. Actually American breeding ceased all together in 1910, at least as far as registered Mastiffs were concerned, and all the lines imported over the previous 30 plus years, including very expensive champions and littermates of champions, simply disappeared. The American Mastiff fancy was critically dependent on British dogs, and failed to become self-sustaining. This might not have been so bad a problem except that in the previous years there had been a dramtic decrease in the base stock in Britain. This certainly kick-started the American decline, but what caused the British decline?
The usual suspect is Ch Crown Prince, the sensation of the 1880's, whose life began and ended in controversy. His parentage was disputed between Young Prince, a lightly regarded dog who still is listed as his sire, and The Emperor, a better headed dog, and one with related dogs which carried a chocolate mask. CP himself had the chocolate mask, but the even bigger controversy was, that though he was remarkable for the time for his thickset body and his short, broad head, he was straight in stifle and hock, and generally spindly at the rear. Fifty years later, E G Oliver placed the blame for the Mastiff decline on the unsoundness of CP's offspring. He often quoted W K Taunton, a breeder of that era, on the craze for shorter heads, though Taunton himself had aquired a CP son, Ch Hotspur, who was behind a lot of the champions of later years. The fact is that CP totally dominated the breeding of the late 19th century, and that coincided with the decline. All CP's descendents were not, however, unsound: Marcel's favourite, Beaufort, was a CP grandson. It is my view that a lot of the older breeders discontinued their activities because the public didn't want their mid-19th century style Mastiffs. J Hutching was registering more Mastiffs than anyone else before CP swept the board, but I can't find any dogs of his breeding in the existing pedigrees. Taunton said "the type of his dogs did not meet the views of the breeders of the day". The crisis could have been over sooner, but the breeder who (in a showing sense) dominated the early 20th century, Lt-Colonel Zaccheus Walker, doesn't seem to have ever sold a registered Mastiff, other than one to his brother! I therefore put the decline not on the dogs, but on the people.

As a result of this CP dominance of Mastiff breeding, there were about 30 of his great-grandchildren, alive around the turn of the century, at the back of our modern dogs. You will have a hard time finding any other contempories of these Mastiffs. Crown Prince was truly the father of his breed. However, there were some unregistered Mastiffs who were still cropping up, but no doubt some of them were Crown Prince descendents too. Connie, Countess, Floss, Gyrlie, Kitty Marton, Lady Marton, Lady Argyll, Nell, Princess, The Rebel Queen, Ronda and more, mostly bitches, show that there was a pool of dogs whose offspring could be registered as Mastiffs if their owner wanted to do it. They seem to have just been brood bitches and generally they don't have any surviving descriptions. They may have provided some soundness as the Mastiff breed recovered, but clearly the type we have today comes directly from Crown Prince.
