Reply with quote | #454 | My Name is Victor I'm the president of Dogs Training Youth A program that takes at risk youth and teaches them to clicker train rescue dogs which are then made available for adoption. I also help a few rescues in our area with last chance dogs that without my help would be put to sleep. I received the mastiff in the photo as a owner surrender last night . She was wearing the muzzle because she has dog aggression issues and has caused a dog two trips to the vet for stitches and also tried to hit a dog here .I'm happy to announce in a days time she is not wearing the muzzle and is no longer showing dog aggression or cat aggression. She is very under weight for a mastiff 98 pounds and shes 4 years old . Her tail has been bobbed and will have the stitches removed shortly . I am a professional trainer and A.K.C Canine Good Citizen evaluator with a apprenticeship in animal behavior. I started training in 1999. Not that often do we get mastiffs in my line of work which speaks volumes about the breed so I was lucky enough to get advice from a professional breeder here in Cincinnati about the Mastiffs traits and putting the weight back on her the correct way ! (linfertsmastiffs). I'm a germanshepherd guy and have rehabbed lots of dogs but for some reason this girl has really touched me so shes home ! I'm keeping her and may join a club in our state ,maybe this is the beginning of me rehabbing mastiffs nobody wants . She needs all her shots brought up to date , a complete health exam ,and be spayed . I'm here to learn as much about the mastiff as I can , To meet some new friends and network . our web site is http://www.dogstrainingyouth.com Thank You. __________________ He is your friend , your partner , your defender , your dog. Welcome to the Forum Victor. You have come to the right place! Do a search on any subject you are interested in and there will be lots of information come up. It is a great tool. Be sure to ask lots of questions. Welcome to the breed too - once owned by a mastiff you will never be the same. __________________ Linda Greeson

Reply with quote | #458 | Hello all. We are currently debating on adding a new addition to our family. We are looking at both Mastiff (English) and Bloodhounds. We are experienced in both large breeds.....and slobber!
We have 2 basset hounds right now, and also have a small farm with about 40 acres. We feel that an English Mastiff may be the right addition to our family. We are currently looking for the right breeder. It may be a year or 2 (or 3) before we actually get a puppy, but we want to make the right choice.
Our St. Bernard/Rottweiler, Teddy, passed away last year at the age of 12 (He was a rescue). We miss the big brute! |

Reply with quote | #463 | Hi, My name is Brent, and I have a 5 month old male Mastiff named Kona. We went to the vet today, and he is 69 pounds. He is fawn, and if I can figure out how to make the file size smaller, I will post a picture of him.Attached Images:

Hi Everyone, My name is Dana and I live just outside St. John's, NL, Canada. I am a Construction Safety Officer, previously a paramedic. We live on approximately 25 acres of land. We have three children, ages 2 1/2, 11 and 13. We own a Siamese cat, Nikita, a Chinese Shar Pei, Tai, and our newest addition, our English Mastiff, Thunders Lair Ivory Vision!!! Ivory was born out of Thunders Lair Mastiffs on August 17, 2009. I flew to Halifax, NS to get our new girl and I will never ever forget how excited and nervous all at the same time I was while waiting for the breeder to bring Ivory to the hotel to me. When I first laid eyes on my little girl all I could do was cry!!! We have wanted an English mastiff for a very long time but the situation was just not right, baby too young, I was working away lots etc.... As soon as everything settled down, we carefully made our decision. The only other concern we had was how Tai was going to accept her. Shar Pei's are known to be very unpredictable, but he accepted her with "open paws"!!! She has taken the house over!!! Ivory however started to develop diarrhea a few days after she had gotten home. She would be fine, then diarrhea, fine then diarrhea. We had her to the vet a few times, fecal samples tested and they all came back fine. All of a sudden she started to drool very large amounts. She was being fed the same food as the breeder weaned her to. Thanks to Sue, owner of the dad, she insisted on having her treated for coccidia. A few nights ago Ivory started to have blood in her stool, throwing up, squatting all over this house like she had to use the bathroom so we rushed her to the vet at 9:30 in the night. The vet gave her two injections, an anti inflammatory and an anti biotic. She also sent Ivory home with antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication. Today she seems a lot better and the drooling has almost completely stopped. Finally, the vet treated her for what she needed (with us demanding). I talked to a lot of people about her drooling and nobody has heard of this before but apparently the reason she was drooling was because she had a sore belly. I am praying this course of medication will make my girl all better. Sorry to have written so much but when I get started talking about her I just cannot shut up!!! Til next time, take care everyone!!
Dana

Reply with quote | #465 | Hello All!! My name is Ashley and I'm a long time mastiff lover, and an owner of 7 years. Our first mastiff was Chewy, who sadly died of bone cancer in October of 2008. She was a great girl and I still think about her every day.
We now have Nala. A 14 month old fawn female. She is a giant, gumpy, slobbery mess....but I wouldn't expect anything else out of my baby girl. I found this forum looking to meet other mastiff lovers and possibly get some tips on showing. I bought Nala from a breeder of 25 years who hurt her arm permanently and could no longer continue on with mastiffs. Nala was her pick of the litter and was to be used in her breeding program. I would love to breed her, but would not consider doing so without A LOT more information and of course showing her.
I do have experience with whelping litters as I did a lot of rescues..but never with mastiffs. We hired a handler for her, but I decided not to go with her after the first session when I saw her hit my girl to get her to do what she wanted. Just the overall experience did more damage than good in my opinion. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know all of you.

I am Sandra. I picked up my new baby 2 days ago. Her name is Charlie. I hope to post pictures soon. I went about my decision backward (common for me). I have already brought Charlie home, now I do research. Silly me! I work with children of all ages in a hospital setting and know about sensitive personalities. She is already attached at the hip with me. My lab/mix named 99 has picked Charlie to mother. The other lab/mix is named Max and he acts like he is jealous. I hope the three of them become a great family together. |

Reply with quote | #469 | I don't often read this thread, (sorry, too busy), but I dropped in, and thought I would make a couple of comments. Sandra, I would be pro-active about Max and Charlie. Just make it clear to Max that you as pack leader say that Charlie is part of the pack. Allow interactions, but not inappropriate interactions. To be fair, don't cuddle Charlie too much in front of Max, but when you do, make sure he knows it is your right to do so. Gordon, be aware of all the consequences when you rescue. They don't always work out. Ashley, well done for sacking that handler! Dana, rough start, but looks like you are OK now. Pups often have bad patches. I would check her temperature if she becomes unwell. Brent, almost any image editing application will let you reduce picture size. Tim, Shorty looks like a great pal. Tanisa, look forward to your questions, but I can't guarantee we will all agree! knightc, you are going to need separate, secure areas for the dog and the bitch, when she's in heat, even if you decide to mate them. Mamahen, Bloodhounds are great, but you might have trouble keeping one within the boundaries of your forty acres! Roaming is not usually a problem with Mastffs. Dan, Duke is a very big boy, but don't let him get too heavy. Victor, congratulations on the work you are doing. My family had GSD's. You will find the Mastiff a harder animal to train, but very reliable when she gets the message. They are much more sensitive than they look, and need a softly, softly approach. This is going to be an education for you, as well as her. Jessica, good luck. You have started the right way. __________________ "Nothing is foolproof, because fools are ingenious" |
